About Diwali (Lakshmi Puja)
The main night of Diwali (Tihar in Nepal): homes are lit with lamps and the goddess Lakshmi is worshipped in the evening while the new-moon day (Amavasya) is in force.
Also called: Deepavali, Lakshmi Puja, Laxmi Puja, Tihar Laxmi Puja.
How the date is decided
Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) falls on Krishna Amavasya of the lunar month (purnimanta naming). The day is the evening on which the tithi is in force during pradosh — the first part of the night after sunset (3/15 of the night). Times are computed for each city's latitude, longitude and time zone (daylight saving included).
Different families and temples follow different traditions (for example Smarta vs Vaishnava, or Nepal's official list). When in doubt, follow your family priest or local temple.
